Out and about in March
Enlighten 2016 will see the nation’s capital come alive after dark from March 4 till 12. Illuminating Canberra for its sixth year, Enlighten will transform the Parliamentary Triangle into a hive of activity, featuring the return of the Enlighten Night Noodle Markets, a range of free entertainment and stunning architectural projections that will light up six of Australia’s most iconic buildings.
The Black Opal Stakes is Canberra's premier race day, on Sunday 6 March at Thoroughbred Park. Now, in its 44th year, the day is one of the more important Autumn race days on the calendar. The Black Opal Stakes program includes the tab.com.au Canberra Cup. There is just as much action off the track as on, with Myer Fashions on the Field. Categories are Classic Ladies Racewear, Classic Mens Racewear and the Millinery Award.
The Canberra Balloon Spectacular is considered to be one of the best and longest running hot air ballooning events in the world. Held over nine days, 12 to 20 March, the 2016 Canberra Balloon Spectacular will include some special shape balloons from across the globe adding a sense of novelty to the stunning setting each day. Patrons will be treated to an experience of the senses with a flurry of colour, sound and movement. The atmosphere of the balloons is complemented by delicious hot breakfast available for purchase provided by the Belconnen Lions Club.
Skyfire 2016 delivers a magnificent display of fireworks set to a soundtrack simultaneously broadcast on Hit 104.7 on Saturday 19 March. Skyfire will light up on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin's central basin, with great free live entertainment at Regatta Point before the fireworks explode!
The Canberra Airport Open Day is held every two years, with the next event being held on Sunday 3 April 2016. The Open Day is filled with children’s activities and planes of all shapes and sizes from past, present and future.
